Amazonite is a bead that comes from one of the kinds of microcline feldspar. It is a lovely blue green
mineral that is found most often in Australia, Zimbabwe, the United States, Russia, Namibia, and in
Madagascar. Some high quality specimens were recently found in Pike’s Peak. Amazonite is found in
granitic rocks in these areas. Amazonite was named for the Amazon River. However, this region is not
one in which the mineral is found at all.

Amazonite beads come in many different, beautiful configurations and shades of green. The light
green color is one of the most popular because of its unique, almost luminescent appearance.
However, it also comes in shades of deep green and variegated combinations of the light and dark.
There is also a type of blue Amazonite that is more rare and more expensive than the green kinds.

Amazonite beads on beadsbarn are sold as chips, faceted and non-faceted roundels, round beads,
rectangular and square beads and many other shapes and different sizes. It is a very hard, durable
bead that is not prone to scratching or chipping. This adds to its popularity with jewelry makers. The
beads are highly acclaimed for their sophisticated and attractive appearance and are popular among all
demographics.

It was originally thought that because Amazonite was such a brilliant green color, it contained copper.
That theory, however, has recently been dispelled. Scientists have now learned that the color comes
from trace amounts of lead and water that are found inside the feldspar.
